About This Piece
About La Tersicore del Nord, Op. 147
La Tersicore del Nord, Op. 147 is a collection of sixteen short pieces for solo guitar composed during the later years of Mauro Giuliani’s life. The title refers to Terpsichore, the Muse of dance in Greek mythology, and the collection contains a variety of charming, dance-like pieces written in a relatively accessible style.
A Bright and Lively Allegro Vivace
No. 10, marked Allegro Vivace, is a bright and energetic piece with a lively character from the very beginning. Both tempo markings suggest a brisk and animated performance, perfectly matching the light, spirited character of the music.
Key Changes and Useful Guitar Techniques
The piece is largely organized into clear eight-measure phrases. It moves from E minor to G major, returns to E minor, and later shifts to the parallel key of E major. A D.C. then brings the music back to the opening, creating a clear sense of contrast and return within a relatively short piece.
Slurs, ornaments, and double stops appear throughout the music, making this piece particularly useful for players who are moving from the beginner to the intermediate level and want to develop these techniques in a musical context.
Playing Tips
Add Variety to the Repeats
The score includes repeats for each eight-measure section, but it is also perfectly reasonable to play the piece straight through without taking every repeat.
If you do take the repeats, try not to play each phrase in exactly the same way. A subtle change in tone color, dynamics, or phrasing between the first and second time can make the repeated sections feel more purposeful and give the performance a stronger sense of direction.
Keep the Tempo Light but Controlled
The Allegro Vivace marking calls for a light and energetic tempo, but be careful not to rush.
In passages containing slurs, ornaments, or double stops, practice slowly at first and make sure that the rhythm and articulation remain clear before gradually increasing the tempo.
