About This Piece
This is a solo classical guitar arrangement of the “Air” from J.S. Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3. Widely known as “Air on the G String,”
it is one of Bach’s most famous and beloved works.
Its graceful, flowing melody and beautifully shifting harmonies have made it familiar even to listeners who do not regularly listen to classical music.
The piece is often heard in concerts, films, ceremonies, and many other settings.
Another of its distinctive features is the delicate musical dialogue between the main melody and the countermelody that appears later in the piece.
Playing Tips
Because the piece is played at a slow tempo, it is relatively approachable overall.
On the second beat of the third measure, you need to hold the first fret of the sixth string and the fifth fret of the first string at the same time.
Try to stretch your left hand enough to reach both notes.
If the stretch is too difficult, you may release the bass note slightly early.
Later in the piece, a countermelody begins to respond to the main melody.
Listen carefully to both lines and try to bring out the musical dialogue between them.
